Based on author Bernhard Schlink's best-selling novel, 'The Reader' opens in post-World War II Germany where ailing teenager, Michael Berg, is being nursed back to health by Hanna, an older woman. After making a full recovery the pair are reunited and Michael discovers Hanna loves being read to. 

 

Over the course of time, they enter into a passionate yet clandestine affair when Hanna vanishes without a trace.  Michael is heartbroken.  However, ten years on, when Michael is observing Nazi war crime trials as a law student, Hanna wanders into the courtroom and takes a seat in the defendant's chair.  Her past suddenly comes into focus and Michael uncovers a secret that will have a profound impact on both of their lives…
